As part of its efforts to provide emergency support to areas damaged by the April 2016 earthquakes centered in Kumamoto Prefecture, The Nippon Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Oita Prefectural Government to provide support for relief and recovery in the prefecture in close coordination with the prefectural government. Under the agreement, the Foundation intends to assist with recovery efforts in the prefecture including support of up to one million yen per organization to support activities of NGOs and volunteers, consolation monies to families with homes that were damaged, and the establishment of a financing structure for the rebuilding of homes and businesses.

The agreement was signed by Oita Governor Katsusada Hirose and The Nippon Foundation President Takeju Ogata at a ceremony at the Oita Prefectural Government offices. This follows the signing of a similar agreement and the establishment of a support center in Kumamoto Prefecture on April 26.
