The Nippon Foundation and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of maritime development on January 24, 2017, at a ceremony in Tokyo attended by Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Monica Maeland. The Nippon Foundation has long been active in the field of maritime human resource capacity building, and in October 2016 held The Nippon Foundation Ocean Innovation Consortium as a nationwide initiative encompassing the industrial, academic, public, and private sectors with the aim of cultivating human resources involved in offshore development. NTNU has the main responsibility for higher education in technology in Norway, an ocean nation like Japan. The MoU confirms that The Nippon Foundation and NTNU will cooperate more closely in areas including crude oil, natural gas, and marine energy. This cooperation will also include sharing knowledge and information related to marine engineering, developing the capabilities of young engineers, and promoting the development of marine engineering at the global level. Specific details are to be worked out at NTNU’s summer school for marine engineering, to be held from August to September, with roughly 10 students from Japan expected to participate.

A workshop to promote exchanges under the MoU was held on January 23, bringing together NTNU, seven Japanese universities (University of Tokyo, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Yokohama National University, Osaka Prefecture University, Kobe University, Hiroshima University, and Kyushu University), and the National Maritime Research Institute. The workshop featured an introduction to NTNU by Sverre Steen, head of the Department of Marine Technology, as well as an explanation of the summer school program.
