Gallaudet University Sasakawa International Scholarship 2004-05

The Sasakawa International Scholarship is a partial-tuition program that The Nippon Foundation has established at Gallaudet University. This program is for deaf exchange students from developing countries who have met the entrance requirements of Gallaudet University, but who do not possess the financial means to attend.

| Personal Profile | Ms. Africa hails from Quezon City, Philippines and is an alumna of the Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf. She earned an associate's degree in computer operations from Miriam College. Majoring in accounting, she loves to resolve challenges and hope to teach deaf children the ability to solve puzzles. She is extremely active during the school year, working as student assistant at the computer lab and Department of Public Safety. |

| Personal Profile | Mr. Ayala's hometown is La Reina Santiago, Chile. He is an alumnus of the Colegio Andalican. Mr. Ayala has not yet declared a major, but is considering business. He participated in Gallaudet's English Language Institute and served a one-year term as vice president. Mr. Ayala says of his future plans, "I want to be able to educate deaf people in Chile by having knowledge and resources in Business." At his leisure, he enjoys playing volleyball, soccer, tennis, and watching movies. |

| Personal Profile | Ms. Buenaventura is from Marikina City, Philippines. She is majoring in computer information systems. She is quite busy during the school year, working at the Registrar's Office and Department of Business's computer lab. Upon receiving her degree, she plans to return to the Philippines to share her knowledge and experience with other Filipino deaf people. |

| Personal Profile | Ms. Cai is from Beijing, China where she attended the Beijing High School for the Deaf and Changchun University. She is currently studying counseling as a special graduate student. Ms. Cai is a Dean's List student and has won three consecutive Student of the Year awards in college. Athletically, she is a champion javelin and discus thrower. Ms. Cai hopes to go on to study deaf education, which she hopes to use to teach deaf students in China. She also aspires to create an educational bridge between the Untied States and her home country. |

| Personal Profile | Ms. Chang comes to Gallaudet from Taiwan. Skilled in several languages, she is the three-time winner of a Chinese language essay-writing contest and loves to read. At Gallaudet, she is studying both accounting and graphic design. In the future, she would like to become an English teacher and help teach the language to deaf people in Taiwan. |

| Personal Profile | Mr. Dasgupta is a native of Kolkata, West Bengal. He is an alumna of The Assembly of God Church School. Mr. Dasgupta is majoring in communication arts (computer graphics and design). He is a first place recipient of the National Painting Competition in India, which is organized by the Indian Council of Child Welfare. As his acdemic schedule permits, Mr. Dasgupta can be found painting, swimming, acting, and performing mime with the theatre group, The Action Players. |

| Personal Profile | Mr. Garfias, of Santiago, Chile, is an alumnus of San Esteban Diacono School. Majoring in business with an emphasis on finance, he plans to pursue a master's degree from Gallaudet. Mr. Garfias envisions in establishing a business in his country to advance the education of deaf people. He is very involved in extra-curricular activities, especially the English Language Institute, where has served as treasurer and received the Outstanding Service Award. |

| Personal Profile | Originally from Presov, Ms. Herdicka previously attended a vocational school for clothing making and the Presov University of Humanities and Natural Sciences. She is a business student at Gallaudet and is involved in numerous co-curricular activities, including swimming and working with English Language Institute Students Organization (ELISO), and sewing. She made the Dean's List multiple times, and graduated sum laude from Gallaudet University. She has been recognized for outstanding service in ELSO, and made best swimming record at Gallaudet. She looks forward to graduating, returning to Slovakia, and providing support to other young people who want to do the same. |

She attended the De La bat School for the Deaf there and won numerous awards for sportsmanship and academic excellence. She went on to attend Mactrain College, majoring in graphic design. At Gallaudet, Ms. Krige would like to go on to earn a graduate degree in psychology. Ms. Krige continues to be involved with athletics by swimming and hiking. She dreams of empowering people from South Africa and other countries by helping them to develop professional skills. |

She has published articles in Spanish about her research projects with the argentinean deaf population. She is now pursing a PhD in clinical psychology at Gallaudet, where she is a Dean's List student and a former President's Scholar. Ms. Simon devotes her spare time to working for advocacy organizations and reading. She plans to return to Argentina to teach, practice clinical psychology, and continue her research. |
