Rather than move on to pursue a career in this field, however, Dr.
Gopal decided to stay on at the hospital and work for the social
rehabilitation of those who were struggling to overcome leprosy-
related stigma. He began by establishing the hospital's first
social welfare and rehabilitation department.
In 1993, he earned a PhD in rehabilitation from Ranchi University,
and from that point forward began to enthusiastically promote his
cause both at home and around the world. In 1994, he became one of
the founders of IDEA, or the International Association for
Integration, Dignity and Economic Advancement. This organization,
which is the world's first NGO of its kind that is comprised of
those affected by leprosy, has helped thousands of people to find
their own footing in a world that insists on discriminating
against them.
Dr. Gopal's work lead him to be elected as a member of ILEP's
medico-social commission, and to publish an ILEP book, entitled
Socio-economic Rehabilitation Guidelines. The book is used widely
by organizations around the world
His efforts have earned him laurels and global respect. He has
received the National Award from the president of India, the Erwin
Stindl Memorial Oration Award, The International Raoul Follereau
Award from AIFO in Italy and the Wellesley Bailey Award in England.
It was Dr. Gopal's fight to overcome not only his own problems,
but to enable others to do the same that prompted FESCO to select
him for one of its largest awards this year. The Nippon Foundation
is proud to be able to honor this man in such a way.
