Brazil has a unique method for dealing with Hansen disease (leprosy). People can now call "Telehansen," a toll free number, to discuss where treatment is available and ask about any other concerns they might have concerning the disease. This toll free dial-in service is funded by the Nippon Foundation in partnership with the Brazil-based organization Movimento de Reintegracao das Pessoas Atingidas pela Hanseniase (Morhan), in the hope of eliminating leprosy in Brazil.

Unfortunately, Brazil has a serious problem with Hansen's disease. In the last six years an average of 47,000 new cases a year have been officially reported. The nation accounts for 90% of the leprosy cases on the South American continent.

The main goal of Morhan and Telehansen is to serve as an open channel where the Brazilian population can find information to help cure Hansen's disease. The toll free number is especially useful in reaching the poor population where the prevalence rate is higher and the violation of human rights is more frequent. The help line offers different services to the public:

1) Affected persons and their families can ask questions to clear up doubts about the disease, and the treatments available, including free health care. Legal rights against discrimination can be discussed, and guidance is also given about the nearest available health center where treatment can be obtained.

2) Media and Professional Information: Journalists can receive up-to-date statistics and news about the disease. Suggestions are made about what professionals can be interviewed for further human insights into the disease. Health professionals can use Telehansen to get an up-to-date schedule of courses and seminars being offered in Brazil about Hansen's disease.

3) Researchers: Students and researchers are pointed in the right direction for informative material about the area which interests them.

During 2007 Telehansen received 11,539 inquiries about the disease -- 67.04% higher than the year before. There has been an increase of questions about social problems like social security benefits and social assistance for people with Hansen's disease. Also, Morhan and Telehansen have taken a strategic role for the defense of the human rights of leprosy-affected people.

Nippon Foundation has worked in partnership with the private Morhan initiative since 2006, believing that this social service is of great importance to the entire nation of Brazil in its fight against Hansen's disease.
