The Nippon Foundation and Tokyo University Ocean Research Institute agreed to cooperate on the translation of the contents of Invitation to Oceanography in order to facilitate and support a broad range of ocean studies in Japan. This comprehensive publication covers worldwide academic studies and activities related to the sea. The translation provides researchers and oceanographers with the most update information available in the world of ocean studies.

The original English language version was published by Professor Paul R. Pinet of Colgate University in the United States. The first edition of this high quality magazine came out in 1992. The magazine has an excellent reputation among ocean scholars as well as a broad range of people with an interest to learn more about the sea.

This innovative and educational publication has also recently come out with its fifth English language edition.

All editions include the most up to date and fascinating discoveries in oceanography. It is considered the most comprehensive and student-friendly resource available today.

The contents span the four major aspects of ocean science: geology, chemistry, physics, and biology. Readers highly acclaim its conversational style approach to subject matter.

The English language Fifth Edition has a new chapter on global climate change that discusses global warming in the 21st century and its likely impact on ocean systems.

The magazine includes end of chapter questions, excellent color photographs and illustrations, and a well chosen assortment of selected readings.

The Nippon Foundation and Tokyo University Ocean Research Institute co-sponsor the Ocean Alliance Project and the Deep Sea Studies Leadership Program in which professional seminars discuss issues related to ocean studies.
