The Nippon Foundation has decided to establish a scholarship fund at The Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita Prefecture, Japan. An opening ceremony will be held
The fund will be part of the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders’ Fellowship Fund (SYLFF). SYLFF was established by The Nippon Foundation in 1987 in order to nurture future leaders around the world, and is run by the Tokyo Foundation. APU’s induction into the program, which provides one-million-dollar funds at participation institutions, brings the total number of SYLFF universities and research institutions to 69, from a total of 44 countries. To date, more than 13,000 people have received SYLFF scholarships.
APU is a model in Japan of international university education, and joins Waseda University and Keio University to become the third Japanese institution to receive a SYLFF fund. SYLFF focuses, not only on the granting of scholarships, but on the maintenance of a network of graduates as well. It is hoped that as APU joins the ranks of SYLFF institutions, it will proactively take part in this network, facilitating the spread of information from Japan into the world.
APU will be responsible for the management of its SYLFF fund, and it plans to provide 3 fellowships per year, for a total of one million yen per year, in the humanities and social sciences.
