November 20th is Universal Children's Day. It is also the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. In commemoration of this day, the United Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) has begun a new cooperative initiative with China's Xinhua news agency.

Under the new agreement, UNICEF will share with Xinhua its expertise and on-the-ground knowledge of the situation of children in the more than 150 countries where it operates. In turn, Xinhua will use its multi-media channels and 117 international bureaus to deliver news reporting about children on a global base.

The program begins today with a live 24-hour broadcast by Xinhua, entitled "Global News Day for Children."

In view of the sordid conditions under which many children around the world must live, The Nippon Foundation warmly welcomes this joint initiative.
