The BCLT Literary Translation Summer School Japanese to English Workshop, which will be held at the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK) from July 24 to July 30 this year, is currently accepting applications. This year’s workshop will be lead by novelist Mieko Kawakami and translator Michael Emmerich.

MIEKO KAWAKAMI is a novelist, poet, musician, and actress. She began a career as a singer in 2002 and in 2007 she made her literary debut with the short story “Watakushi ritsu in ha-a, mata wa sekai” (Myself and a Toothache), published in the literary journal Waseda bungaku zero. The story was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize. The following year, she received the Akutagawa Prize for “Chichi to ran” (Breast and Ovum), and in 2010 she was awarded the Murasaki Shikibu Literary Prize for her novel ‘Hebun’ (Heaven). In 2010 she also won the Kinema Jumpo Newcomer’s Award for her acting in the film Pandora no hako (Pandora’s Box). MICHAEL EMMERICH is Assistant Professor, Premodern Japanese Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara. He has published widely in English and Japanese on early modern, modern, and contemporary Japanese literature, He is also the author of numerous book-length translations of works by writers such as Kawabata Yasunari, Yoshimoto Banana, Takahashi Gen’ichirō, Akasaka Mari, Yamada Taichi, Matsuura Rieko, and Kawakami Hiromi. He is also the editor of two books for students of the Japanese language: Read Real Japanese: Fiction, and the forthcoming New Penguin Parallel Texts: Short Stories in Japanese
