Senior Myanmar Military Officials to Visit Japanese SDF FacilitiesBeginning of Exchange with Myanmar’s Military on Transfer to Civilian Rule

The Nippon Foundation has launched a Japan – Myanmar Military Officials Exchange Programme to facilitate exchanges between Japan’s Self Defense Forces and Myanmar’s military. A group of ten senior military officers from Myanmar, led by Lieutenant General Ye Aung, will visit Japan from December 8 to 17, and tour three Self-Defense Force facilities during their stay.

Even while Western countries had imposed economic sanctions on the country, the Nippon Foundation has been providing humanitarian support to Myanmar for school construction and medical services. We have also supported the country’s democratization through initiatives including the mediation of peace negotiations between the government and armed ethnic minority groups. The Japan – Myanmar Military Officials Exchange Programme, which is scheduled to continue for five years, aims to facilitate Myanmar’s transition to a civilian government by providing opportunities for senior military officers to interact with their Self Defense Force counterparts and learn about the role of the military under a civilian government.

During their visit, the officials will tour the Ministry of Defense headquarters, the Maizuru Naval Base and the supply ship JDS Mashu, the Hamamatsu Air Base, and the National Defense Academy, and will also attend seminars on human resource development, self-defense policy, troop utilization, and international assistance.
