With an aging, contracting population, Japan’s social structure is facing a major turning point, making conventional methods for resolving social issues increasingly less effective. The Nippon Foundation is organizing The Nippon Foundation Social Innovation Forum 2016, to be held September 28-30, 2016, at Toranomon Hills Forum in Tokyo, to search for specific measures to resolve these increasingly complex issues.
The Forum will feature workshops led by specialists working on the front lines of addressing social issues in a variety of fields, as well as presentations on the theme of “Japan’s future” from 11 “Social Innovators” working on 10 projects selected from across Japan. The Forum will be Japan’s largest event in the field of nonprofit organizations and social contribution. On September 28, Shinjiro Koizumi, a Diet member and son of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, will give a keynote address on the subject of “creating Japan’s future,” in which he will share his own experiences and expectations for the next generation. Workshops will be held on September 29, led by approximately 100 experts from Japan and around the world, including Hiroshi Komiyama, former president of the University of Tokyo and chairman of the Platinum Society Network, and Lin Kobayashi, founder of Japan’s first international boarding school. These workshops will seek approaches for resolving Japan’s social issues through discussions on the shape of the society to which Japan should aspire, how to fund activities, and how to develop and use human resources and information, with specific topics including entrepreneurship for persons with disabilities, the role of the media in addressing social issues, and the skills that tomorrow’s children will need.
