The Nippon Foundation is engaged in a variety of projects related to literature, including introducing Japanese works to the world. The Tokyo International Literary Festival was first held in 2013, and this year, from March 2 to 6, the event will be held for the third time. The program has been announced and registration is open for persons wishing to attend.
The Tokyo International Literary Festival brings together authors, translators, editors, and readers from Japan and around the world as an opportunity to interact through a variety of events, and is Japan’s largest literary festival. More than 70 side events will also be held during the weeks before and after the main events. In addition to the events being hosted or co-hosted by the Festival’s secretariat, the lineup of original offerings includes talks by authors, readings, dance, and film screenings being planned by bookstores, publishers, embassies, companies, and individuals.

Invited Authors

Yiyun Li (United States)

Born in China, Ms. Li lives in the United States and writes in English. Her novels include A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and The Vagrants.

Seth Fried (United States)

Winner of the Pushcart Prize for short stories, Mr. Fried’s works include Frost Mountain Picnic Massacre and Animalcula: A Young Scientist’s Guide to New Creatures.

Steve Erickson (United States)

Known for his highly imaginative narratives, Mr. Erickson’s novels include Tours of the Black Clock, Arc d’X, and Zeroville.

John Freeman (United States)

Mr. Freeman is the former editor of the literary magazine Granta and current editor of the contemporary literature magazine Freeman’s.

Sheng Keyi (China)

Ms. Keyi is the author of the internationally acclaimed Northern Girls, which explores issues related to women’s rights in Chinese society.

Syaman Rapongan (Taiwan)

Mr. Rapongan is a writer from the indigenous Tao tribe of Orchid Island. His novels include Dream Ocean and Black Wings.
