Recognizing that manga (Japanese comic books) are “fun,” “easy to understand,” and “create empathy,” The Nippon Foundation launched the Manga Edutainment Project to Open New Worlds to select and promote “educational manga” that were published as general works, but have educational value as well and can open new worlds and inspire children to learn. The project selected 100 works in 2015 and an additional 50 were selected in 2016, by selection committees chaired by manga author Machiko Satonaka.
As a related event, a campaign was held from December 2016 to January 2017, using social media to allow readers to vote for their own favorite “educational manga” and compile a comprehensive popularity ranking. A total of 613 votes were cast, and 10 of the top 20 works, including the top 3, were also included in the Manga Edutainment project’s list of 150. Copies of the top-ranked manga and other selected works from the project’s list are being donated to the TSURUMI Children’s Hospice in Osaka. TSURUMI is modeled on Britain’s Helen & Douglas House, and is Japan’s first community-supported hospice for children.
