Announcement of Closing of Donations for Response to September 2018 Hokkaido Earthquake

The earthquake that struck the Iburi region in the southwestern part of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on September 6, 2018, triggered landslides across a wide area, causing extensive injuries and damage to homes. The disaster took the lives of 41 people.

The Nippon Foundation began accepting donations specifically for this disaster relief via the Special Fund for Disaster Preparedness on September 7, and stopped accepting donations on November 30.

The fund received 591 donations totaling 19,758,385 yen(as of November 30), and this is being used to provide swift emergency relief and support for reconstruction in accordance with the needs of the areas that suffered damage.

The Nippon Foundation has established the Special Fund for Disaster Preparedness to be able to provide emergency relief in the event of large-scale damage from a major disaster like an earthquake striking directly below a large urban center or in the Nankai Trough off Japan’s Pacific coast. The Fund has received contributions from many people, and we ask for your continued cooperation.
