Extension of Period for Receiving Donations for Noto Peninsula Earthquake Relief
The Nippon Foundation would like to extend its deepest condolences to all who have been affected by the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula and nearby areas on January 1, 2024, and their families.
We have been accepting donations to support relief and recovery activities in affected areas since January 1, 2024. These donations are being used to install sinks and portable, self-contained showers in evacuation shelters and other facilities, to support NGOs providing recovery assistance, to pass on the history of the people who live on the Noto Peninsula, and to support the preservation of Noto’s traditional black roof tiles (that protect houses from both the cold and the sea air) and festivals to restore life in Noto to as it was before the earthquake.
We sincerely thank everyone who has made donations to support these activities.
Many of the hardest-hit areas also have declining, aging populations, making the lack of people to carry out reconstruction work an additional issue. With more than seven months having passed since the earthquake struck, people who had to evacuate their homes are finally moving from evacuation shelters into temporary housing, but living in an unfamiliar environment takes a toll on their health. Other people have no choice but to live in damaged houses that cannot be repaired, and continue to face uncertainty in their daily lives.
In light of this situation, the period for accepting donations for Noto Peninsula earthquake relief efforts has been extended to December 31, 2024 (this date may be subject to change).
We will continue to follow closely developments in damaged areas and coordinate with NGOs working on the ground, to provide assistance as needed based on local requirements.
We ask for your continued support.
