FAQ Scholarships and Research Grants
We receive a large amount of mail weekly, and we answer every letter personally. However, because of the volume of correspondence, sometimes our backlog builds up a bit and replies do not get out as quickly as we would like. In order to aid this process, we have provided a list of frequently asked questions. If you have a question, the chances are good that it is answered below. Save yourself some time and have a look. If your question is not answered, then feel free to ask us directly, via email, fax or post.
Q. I am planning to attend a university overseas. Does The Nippon Foundation provide scholarships for people like me?
- We provide direct financial support only to not-for-profit organizations, not to individuals. We do provide funding indirectly through a number of programs, of which the biggest is the Tokyo Foundation's SYLFF program, but in these cases, the universities involved in the program are the ones which make decisions about scholarships. Questions regarding this money should be directed to the school in question.
Q. I am conducting scientific research at my university. Does The Nippon Foundation provide anything in the way of research grants?
- There is a project conducted by one of our affiliated organizations-the Japan Science Society, which gives grants to young researchers at Japanese universities who excel in their field. Grant moneys are given specifically to projects in the fields of general science, oceanic and maritime research, and the research projects of museum curators.
Please direct inquiries of this sort to the JSS.
In addition, foreign universities and research institutions are free to send applications to the International Program Department, but this type of support is very low on our list of priorities. For further information, please see our Guidelines for The Nippon Foundation's Overseas Grants.
