International Expert Symposium on Thyroid Issues Delivers Recommendations to Fukushima Governor
The Nippon Foundation today delivered to Masao Uchibori, governor of Fukushima Prefecture, the recommendations of the 5th International Expert Symposium in Fukushima on Radiation and Health: “Chernobyl+30, Fukushima+5 – Lessons and Solutions for Fukushima’s Thyroid Question,” held in Fukushima on September 26-27, 2016.
Five years after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, triggered by the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan in March 2011, thyroid cancer has become an issue of concern for the residents of Fukushima. The symposium brought together 24 experts from Japan and overseas, including specialists affiliated with the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), to present their research and exchange opinions over two days. The proposed measures for Fukushima Prefecture were compiled after the symposium, based on the discussions at the symposium as well as the findings of the Fukushima Health Management Survey carried out by Fukushima Medical University, reports from international organizations regarding radiation and health risks, and reports from specialists on the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
